AXMINSTER Outdoor bowls CLUB
About Axminster Outdoor Bowls Club
Nestled within the grounds of Cloakham Lawn Sports Centre on the outskirts of the market town of Axminster, Devon, Axminster Outdoor Bowls Club offers a wonderfully peaceful setting in which to enjoy one of Britain’s most accessible and rewarding sports.
Lawn bowls is far more than a gentle pastime. The walking, bending, stretching, and rolling involved make it a genuinely beneficial low-impact activity for cardiovascular health, muscle strength, and flexibility. At a more competitive level, the strategic demands of the game keep the mind sharp, encouraging concentration, planning, and quick decision-making. It’s a sport that truly works for everyone, regardless of age or ability.
The club plays on a six-rink artificial surface, which runs as its main season from mid-April to mid-September and, weather permitting, year-round. The facilities are excellent; a dedicated pavilion with changing rooms, a bar, kitchen, and function area, alongside a car park and fully accessible provisions for bowlers with disabilities, including a wheelchair ramp onto the rinks and an accessible toilet.
Whether you’re looking for a sociable roll-up with friends, a friendly match against local or touring clubs, or competitive bowling at club and county level, there’s a place for you here. Touring sides are warmly welcomed by arrangement.
New members of all ages are always encouraged to get involved. Not sure if bowls is for you? Taster sessions are available with loan bowls and shoes provided, so you can give the sport a proper go before committing. A club coach is also on hand, with training sessions available by arrangement.
At its heart, Axminster Outdoor Bowls Club is a friendly, supportive, and genuinely welcoming community where the game is as much about good company and a relaxed afternoon as it is about the result. Come and see what you’ve been missing.
